The packaging and processing industry is one of the largest users of vacuum technology, responsible for the production of blister packaging, vacuum sealed bags, meat and fish packaging and even bubble wrap. If part of your evening cooking routine regularly involves peeling apart two pieces of plastic sealed together around a piece of meat or fish, you have experienced the power of vacuum in food packaging and preservation.
Vacuum packaging is widely used throughout the industry for both food and non-food packaging applications. While vacuum removes atmospheric oxygen from the package so aerobic bacteria and fungi have less chance to grow, thus preserving the shelf life of packaged food items, vacuum wraps also allows for compact storage of products for transport and everyday use.
Vacuum Packaging Applications from Food to Film Strips
Atlas Copco’s complete vacuum solutions portfolio includes products for many non-food packaging applications including film strip trimming; filling, closing, capping and labeling; air evacuation; blister machines, palletizing and vacuum forming, especially for the plastics industry; folding out cartons and containers; production of paper bags; waste product and dust collection; drying, holding and handling in the woodworking industry; and pneumatic conveying.
Energy Savings with Variable Speed Drive
Because there are multiple packaging lines that intermittently shut off and go online in an industrial packaging operation, energy savings can be achieved by capitalizing on the variations of demand that occur during production. What if you could replace your current 25-hp system with a 15-hp machine that generates 60 cfm more at the desired vacuum pressure?
While it might seem contradictory for a machine with less hp to produce more cfm, our innovative GHS VSD+ range of oil-sealed rotary screw vacuum pumps modulates the flow at startup, which allows the use of a smaller motor in the vacuum pump and a central vacuum system design. A central vacuum system provides air and vacuum for a number of machines at the same time, which means all equipment can be stored in a separate room to free up factory floor space.
Atlas Copco at PACK EXPO 2015
Atlas Copco Compressors will showcase the new GHS VSD+ range of rotary screw vacuum pumps with variable speed drive and the GA VSD+ range of oil-injected rotary screw compressors at PACK EXPO 2015, hosted from Sept. 28-30 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Atlas Copco’s exhibit will be located at booth No. S-6096. During the show, Atlas Copco’s Deepak Vetal, product marketing manager, oil-free compressors, will give a presentation on food safety, compressed air and the importance of ISO 22000 Certification in food and beverage manufacturing. In the presentation, Vetal will discuss what ISO 22000 compliance means, why compliance is important for food and beverage manufacturers, and how compressed air impacts the food and beverage industry. This presentation will take place at booth S-7632 Food Safety Summit Resource Center on Sept. 30 from 9:30-10 a.m.
